Another point of similarity between Abraham and Balaam is that they both came from Aram Naharaim.

In modern Hebrew, a "hamor" is male and an "aton" is female. The verbs used for Balaam's ass also indicate that it was female. That's the difference. If it has any deeper meaning, I don't know.
